Works Embodying Flesh, Blood, and Life: The Origins and Transformations of Women’s Status
The term “mother” resonates across cultures as a universal signifier of the giver of life, sacrifice, and creation. At the same time, women continue to endure pressures of gendered roles, contested rights, and socio-cultural structures that constantly question their value and position.
Kan Nathiwutthikun’s practice returns to the origins of this meaning through mixed-media works that excavate the corporeal—blood, flesh, and the body—as sites of memory, pain, and vitality. Each form, surface, and color embodies sacrifice, resilience, and the inheritance of feminine identity.
As a female artist, she compels viewers to confront the concealed realities inscribed in women’s bodies and spirits—the discomfort shaped by socially imposed roles, the silence born of structural suppression, and the raw force that propels inner struggles. In this light, “motherhood” is interpreted not merely as the condition of giving life but as a discursive terrain where women negotiate and resist duties, social expectations, and emotional as well as psychological vulnerability, while simultaneously asserting the potential to reconstruct and redefine feminine identity within contemporary society.
